Islip Students Embrace Inclusion During Choose to Include Day

Islip students took an important step toward building a more inclusive school community as the district participated in its third annual Choose to Include Day.
The event is part of the Special Olympics “Spread the Word” campaign and reflects Islip’s ongoing commitment as a Unified school ... one that promotes inclusion and acceptance for all students.
Rooted in the belief that inclusion is a skill that can be learned and practiced, Choose to Include Day encourages students to look beyond differences and embrace empathy. Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of hands-on activities designed to simulate and better understand the challenges individuals with disabilities may face in everyday life.
Through these experiences, students gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of accessibility, patience, and support. The initiative also reinforces the district’s broader mission to foster a compassionate and respectful environment where every individual feels valued.
As participation continues to grow each year, Choose to Include Day has become a meaningful tradition in Islip — one that not only educates students, but empowers them to be active contributors to a more inclusive community.
